Nick is the Chief Technology Officer for Analytics and AI, inside Capgemini's specialist Engineering and R&D division. Nick's formal academic background is in Chemistry, first at Leicester and then gaining his PhD in Quantum Chemistry at the University of Liverpool. Then came a move to Milan as a European Research Fellow to develop new techniques in multiconfiguration Valence Bond electronic structure calculations, working always to balance accuracy of results with a highly compact underlying representation for ease of physical interpretation and tractability of computation. Years later this remains a fundamental theme for modern Artificial Intelligence technologies, showing that some issues are truly universal. After further research at Birmingham University, Nick left academic life to join Tessella, a specialist data science services company, with deep roots in UK big science (JET, Diamond etc) as well as R&D driven global organisations such as Astrazeneca, GSK and Unilever. As CTO, Nick leads the company in a continual programme to assess, adopt and harness genuinely effective novel techniques and technologies, get inside the hype and ensure we are using the best available data science methods to solve the messy, complex, difficult to control problems out in the real world. Tessella is now part of Capgemini, which expands the scope of R&D driven enterprises to drive forward using novel ensemble solutions that join more traditional bottom-up physical modelling with the latest data-driven approaches.
